2012 Continuing Professional Education: short courses and intensive workshops in Digital Storytelling

Digital storytelling is used in teaching and research at QUT as a platform for exploring the benefits and possibilities of social participation in our mediatised world. These include improved digital literacy and communication skills, healthier and more resilient communities, and a public culture enriched by perspectives and experiences that might otherwise be missed.

As part of QUT’s Continuing Professional Education program the Creative Industries & Design Faculty runs a program of short courses in Digital Storytelling and a program of five-day intensive workshops.

Short courses are for anyone who wants to learn how to create their own Digital Stories. Details, including information about dates and costs will be published here shortly.

The five-day intensive workshops are designed to help individuals and organisations to build their own capacities to facilitate social participation through co-creative media production techniques such as digital storytelling. Five-day intensive workshops can also be taken for academic credit by members of the public, in addition to enrolled QUT postgraduate students, or postgraduates visiting from other institutions. It is also possible to do the five-day intensive workshop for 12 credit points of academic credit that may count towards a postgraduate award at QUT or another university. In order to qualify for academic credit you complete two items of assessment in addition to your own digital story. This assessment is supported by the seminar program that is part of the five-day intensive Digital Storytelling workshop. In order to enrol in this option, you need to enrol as a student in a unit of postgraduate study: either KKP405 Co-Creative Media: Digital Storytelling or (from July 1 2012) KCP415 Co-Creative Media: Digital Storytelling. Who should do a Continuing Professional Development Digital Storytelling short course?

If you want to learn how to create digital stories to share with family, friends and larger community and social networks, then the short course is for you. Over two days you will write and record a script and use a movie making application to combine a sound track and 12-20 images to create a compelling personal story. You will work with widely available software, and have the opportunity to finish your story in formats that will allow you to share your digital story by email, to upload it to social media such as Facebook and video aggregators such as YouTube, to lodge it with media and public cultural institutions such as ABC Open and the State Library of Queensland, and to have it broadcast on community television. Expert tutors will individualise learning and make the workshop experience fun. Prior knowledge of digital media applications is not necessary. At the conclusion of the workshop you will understand how to create and communicate many more of your own digital stories. In summary, you will learn how to:

  • Write a script for a digital story
  • Record and edit a voice over, and create a sound track
  • Manipulate images
  • Make your own digital story with cost-effective computer applications
  • Manage copyright issues using Creative Commons licensing
